What drove you to set up East End Prints?

I had worked in print publishing for many years and saw a lot of content that I felt was really strong –not make it through to the final selection in a range. I always felt there was a gap in the market for high quality content for a print on demand range. I think you also get to a certain age –having had years of experience in different roles when you realize you actually only want to be your own boss – the flexibility of running your own business is immense – but I would say its tough and requires a lot of hard work in a competitive market.

With 10 years experience how do you think the creative industry has changed?

We have seen major changes in the last 10 years within the creative industries–more graduates qualifying with first degrees and having to move back home as they cannot find work! I feel for them, even more for future generations who are forced to pay high fees to study. I had a full grant when I was a student -there is absolutely no way I could afford to study now –which seems a pity as I still value those years as beneficial to a creative journey of self discovery.

Young people do have a whole new skill set which has revolutionized the way we communicate – its easier than ever to set up a website and run a cottage industry which can be just a easy to discover as the big brands –so this has to be a positive move. It gives them the freedom to be an entrepreneur from a young age.

The technology we use for print on demand barely existed 10 years ago and this has given us freedom to publish new content without having to produce huge print runs – it gives us creative freedom and an opportunity to take risks on what could be seen as more esoteric content. The printing quality and access to archival inks and good grades of paper have really improved over the last 10 years too.

How do you choose which artists to include within your collections?

Mmm. tricky one.. I guess I have spent a long time building up my taste –by going to a lot of art fairs and looking at an awful lot of websites. I try to balance out the quirky with a bit of a commercial eye –although sometimes I just feel an overwhelming urge to contact the artist and get this in the range!

Which prints are your personal favourites?

My personal favourites change from week to week – its not usually our bestsellers I must admit! Overall, Dale Edwin Murray and Dieter Braun are my favourite illustrators as their work is so simple yet complex at the same time.

You offer Creative Business Mentoring, do you have any top tips for those chasing a creative career?

We do offer one to one business mentoring – this is a combination of life coaching and business skills –this normally concludes with a 2 week action plan and target setting – organisation is still quite alien to the majority of creative people!

My advice would be to know your competitors, find a mentor and observe what your idols are up to. Marketing and more marketing… I meet so many artists with fantastic ideas that really do not have a clue about how to market their work –its the most important lesson if you are freelance and going it alone. Go to as many shows and art fairs as you possibly can –see as much art as you can!

Interview with Helen Edwards -EAST END PRINTS director

Tell me a bit about how the company came about?

I was previously working for Art Group as a researcher sourcing images for Habitat and IKEA. A lot of the time this meant mass commercial art, but Habitat started looking beyond the typical boring landscapes for unique artists

Then about four years ago I launched East End Art Club which concentrated on pop up exhibitions centred around themes – such as the alphabet for instance. And finally, this last December I launched East End print – which allowed me to create my own range of unique prints.

What are the criteria for including an artist on East End prints?

I spent a lot of time researching unseen archives, and searching for art which was hard to find or get a hold of. Because East End Prints operates on an on-demand basis, whereby we only produce the prints once they are ordered, it is a relatively low risk approach. This allows us to take on artists which may not do well in a typical commercial print environment/ setting.

How does the business actually work?

Well it’s really just me individually coordinating and going out and finding new artists. Artists send us a high-resolution scan of their art and then Magnolia Box, can print these in a range of different ways.

We provide a lot of flexibility for customers in choosing the print, the size and what background it is printed on. We have three different finishes including; fine art prints, framed and canvas. The internet has really changed the industry of prints and the way that they are ordered, and it allows us to operate with much less risk. It also allows me to take a slightly environmental slant on prints!

Tell us about one of your new favourite artists on East End Prints?

I am very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to work with Wayne Hemingway who has a range of new prints on our site. His daughter Tilly was actually looking for prints when she came across our website and thought that East End prints would be the perfect partner for her dad’s work. I actually had the opportunity to interview him this last week on his work. Some snippets are included below.

Do you have anything else in the works coming out soon?

We are working in a new series of quote pieces which will be launched soon!

Why do you think the retro type work is important? We dont think of it as retro ..we think of it as iconic / classic type work that deserves an airing to new generations that weren't around the first time .It’s also amazing what forgotten phrases and slogans can be dug up that are relevant today
Do you think the trend in 'type' will continue for much longer? as long as the design and execution is cool and keeps fresh then there will always be a place for it
Is it just a British thing? like many aspects of design we often appreciate things pretty quickly here in the UK ..but type face artworks have potential to excite anywhere
Do you think the masses are ready for this? some things will never cross over fully into the mass market “Keep calm and Carry On” is about as mass as things are going to get with type face / slogans but even that is harder for much of the market than say a painting of a coastline
What was the selection based on ?Positive message? Quite simply fonts and slogans in our LOLC collection that we would have on our walls ...things that make us smile , feel good
Does it matter that these are anonymous works? thats part of the attraction of LOLC ..the Lost Content bit .... trying to imagine the though process , the original uses , how they were designed and artworked etc is fun...occasionally the original artworker opos up ...that adds extra interest

Why do you feel people like words on their walls and not pictures? some people are more graphically minded , it also just looks cooler ..in the right place
Can you predict -or do you want to start the next trend in wall art? this collection is the past , now and the future rolled into one..its TIMELESS

Why I am a fan of Ken Robinson..

In fact I am close to calling him a spiritual leader and it is not often that I can read the text of an individual and want to take them out to dinner. I am utterly in awe not only with his common sense attitude to education but he also has a great sense of humour – an absolute joy to read and listen to.

He has made myself -and no doubt many others- feel liberated that a standard education of academia is not essentially the only way to achieve a fulfilling life. Thank goodness we live in a diverse society with individuals possessing a range of talents and skills!

EEP: Why do you use icons in your work?

RS: I want my work to form an instant connection with people and using iconic people and imagery allows people to relate to it straight away. The reactions are the best part about the artwork and i love to see the contrast of people finding my work funny or shocking or sad or thought provoking. Its like a magician using a deck of cards to do a trick; everyone knows the cards as we have played with them all our lives so to see someone do something different with them and shock people is something i love to see. I wanted to do something similar with my work and get those reactions in a different way.

EEP: How do you feel about street art becoming a saleable item such as an edition?

RS: I don't think a piece of art has to be labelled as street art or anything like that. Yes i use the street as a medium to get my work out there as people will see it straight away and i can see the reactions a piece gets but it is more about the message of a piece. The vehicle i chose to share that work may change from a wall to a canvas or a print but its the message i want to get out there. variety makes things more interesting for an artist so if we have a lot of options for how to share our ideas and work then it keeps the creativity levels up and opens new challenges and platforms to get the work out there.

EEP: Do you think kids have enough to say about the world to spray walls? Does it matter?

RS: It all depends on what message an artist wants to convey on a wall. Some artists are very very clever individuals and can use the public arena of walls to share their ideas and messages as it gives them a voice and can force people to see different points of view. Some artists use this platform in smarter ways than others but it depends if they have a message they want to share or whether they just want to get their name up. without idiots in the world, the genius' don't seem as clever. Luckily in every walk of society and especially in art, we have both ends of that spectrum.

EEP: Your new piece featuring Bin Laden - Do you really think this is the end or do you think its just another personification of evil invented by the great U S of A?

RS: I think Bin Laden was just another chapter in the book of evil. There will always be new characters invented or bought to public attention for us to battle. Its an age old story of people needing an enemy to fight so we understand the importance of morality and good conquering evil that has existed since human civilisation first came to be. whether its in the films, the comic books, religion or real life, the need for an enemy will always exist and Bin Laden was the latest real life bad guy to be defeated but someone new will rise up and take his place.

EEP: Do you consider yourself a political person?

RS: I don't profess to understand politics in great detail and its not something that really excites my imagination. I like people, i like the stories we tell and the reactions we have and thats what inspires me. I want to create artwork that tests peoples emotional responses and work that tells a story or is a social commentary. Im still only 25 so politics might be something that takes more of an interest in the future but right now i'm still learning about what inspires me and makes me laugh and im enjoying that journey of self discovery and documenting it through the art i create.

EEP: Why do you want people to buy your art?

RS: If people like my work or it draws a reaction then I'm happy for them to buy a piece so they can show it to new people and hopefully inspire people in their circle of friends. I am all about inspiring people in different ways and creating artwork and having the opportunity to sell it allows me to give back to the art community in other ways by giving workshops, going to schools and sharing my passion with young people and thats what i'm passionate about. the ability to sell my work to fund my passion is an amazing opportunity and i hope it continues for a long time and i get to keep running my Art Is The Cure organisation.

EEP: How does it feel to be in a top London Gallery show with Opera?

RS: Opera Gallery have given me an amazing platform to share my work in and im incredibly grateful for their belief in me. I've wanted to make art all my life and now i have a major gallery backing me and allowing me to keep living my dream. The bigger the platform i have to share my work, the more people i can hopefully tell my story about Art Is The Cure to and inspire more people through art. I know i'm very lucky to have this opportunity and i'm working incredibly hard to justify it and prove them right in the long run.

EEP: You say art has saved your life- do you think this is more about creativity? Do you think everyone needs to be and should be creative?

RS: I think everyone has the ability to be creative and i try to inspire people that art and creativity can be used as a form of therapy as well. That is what AITC is all about, going into schools and running workshops and educating people about how art therapy can work and how they can use their imaginations and creative releases in new ways and see art differently. It wont work with everyone and i know that but for the people who are open to the idea of dealing with problems by channeling their creativity in a positive way will see amazing results. it has and will continue to change peoples lives and thats what keeps me motivated to keep this movement growing and finding new ways to inspire people.

Word Art - Type Trend -Keep Calm and Be Nice to People

Two years in and we are still seeing plenty of type based prints created and sold and its not just an EAST END thing. Since the Keep Calm and Carry On phenomenon 'type based art' or 'prints with text' have gone stratospheric. In a time when Britain was about to go to war, 1939, the Keep Calm and Carry On poster originated by the Ministry of Information to boost morale. It is perhaps no surprise that as Britain finds itself dragged into war yet again, people find these so appealing.

There has been plenty of subversive content and outtakes appearing as a reaction to this success. Our very own Alison Gilchrist and Nigel Costley have created a unique version fusing the Keep Calm message along with Cameron's drive to create the Big Society.

Why EAST END PRINTS LOVES ART ON DEMAND

There is a lot of discussion around print on demand. However, EAST END PRINTS can only see the benefits to build a sustainable future. The planet is literally straining under the demands of current levels of consumerism and it can only be advantageous for manufacturers to start to consider ways of avoiding costly over stocking.

If we continue over producing more than we need, we will require 5 new planets to service the buying needs of future generations...

Here are some of the reasons we use print on demand:

We only carry enough stock to display.
We don't spend time packaging and posting prints.
It reduces risk - so we can take risks - we don't need to print a massive run from a new artist that we believe is great -therefore we have more choice to take educated risks on new artworks for the market.
We do not need to find a large amount of storage space. Prints are always sent out in the best condition straight from the printer.

Pop up at Pedlars, Notting Hill
